Popularity of Lapland's virtual Santa Claus grows [21.11.09]
The popularity Lapland's real Santa Claus' is increasing also virtually. The nine-year-old Santatelevision.com (www.santatelevision.com) , an Internet TV channel focusing on Santa Claus, his elves, Christmas around the world and northern lights, expects over 700 000 visitors this Christmas. The Santa Claus TV channel is expected to have a 25 % growth this year. Tommi Lappalainen, the CEO of Rovaniemi based Joulupukki TV Ltd (www.joulupukkitv.com) , which is producing Santatelevision, bases this estimation on the growth of early winter 2009.
The popularity of Santatelevision.com has increased continuously since it first started. Since Christmas 2001 the channel's visitor numbers have increased by 20-30% each year. The TV-channel can be viewed in 12 different languages (English, Finnish, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, German, Hungarian, Estonian, Vietnamese, Portugese and Japanese). The different language versions can be also visited in the following adresses: www.joulupukki.fi - www.perenoel.fi - www.weihnachtsmann.fi - www.babbonatale.fi - www.papanoel.fi - www.Papainoel.fi - www.Mikulas.fi - www.Jouluvana.fi - www.Onggianoel.fi
The most viewed videos feature Santa Claus himself, although northern lights and husky dog -videos have also proven to be very popular.
Lappalainen considers Santa Claus' Internet TV-channel very important in promoting Rovaniemi and its real Santa Claus both in Finland and overseas.
The producer of Santatelevision, Joulupukki TV Ltd (www.joulupukkitv.com ) , was established in 2000. Besides the Santa Claus Internet TV-channel, the company produces also DVD-postcards and video services for tourism companies and organisations. According to Lappalainen the channel was maybe established about seven years too early, since promoting and marketing tourism through Internet videos has only broken through during the last two years.
